Victoria BC’s Indie-rock band Wise Child pulls together a dreamy combination of technical, melodic and honest music that reaches deep. With a touch of shoegaze and pop nostalgia, Roger writes quirky math-rock inspired lead guitar melodies that overlie soaring, washed-out rhythm guitar. Driving drums, bass, and underlying ambient synth textures bring power and depth to their songs. Jaya’s lush alto voice evokes a sense of melancholy, a hint of bitterness, something that toes the line between vulnerability and power.
Wise Child recorded their debut EP Lucky You in March of 2016 at The Noise Floor Studio on Gabriola Island, an inspiring cedar-walled studio in the heart of the island. Isolated from the real world and their normal lives, punctuated by pounding rain on the studio roof, the recording of Lucky You solidified Wise Child as a band gaining momentum, and reinforced their need to create and desire to grow.
Lucky You is the story of leaving the comfortable confines of a relationship in pursuit of something more. The songs are tender but hopeful. They depict hard choices, stepping into the unfamiliar, regret, the thrill of new possibilities, and rediscovering love.
Wise Child was named Vancouver Island’s top 10 for CBC Searchlight 2017, and and Victoria’s top bands on the rise by Do250. They have played local festivals Song & Surf, Fernfest and Phillips Backyard Weekender. They have shared the stage with Western Canadian acts Carseat Headrest, Morning Show, 36?, Windego, Bedside, Fortune Killers, and Germany Germany. Their music will resonate with lovers of Feist, Land of Talk, Alvvays, Deerhunter and the War on Drugs.
They recently returned home from their first tour of BC and Alberta and are excited to record their first full length album with Colin Stewart (The New Pornographers, Yukon Blonde, Black Mountain) at The Hive studios this October!
